Chapter 20

A voice in my mind woke me.

It was hard to miss Tolin’s raspy tone. “Time to wake, sweet prince.”

My eyes flew open, and I found myself beside a half-covered Faryn aboard the World Engine. It took me a couple of seconds to boot my brain up, and I silently wondered if I could find a cup of coffee somewhere in the Seven Realms. Tolin’s ghostly form wasn’t anywhere to be seen, and I suddenly realized that last night’s activity would’ve been easy as hell for him to watch.

“Quite a show for you last night, I’m guessing,” I thought back at him.

I slipped as softly as I could out of the covers to avoid waking Faryn.

“If I had half a mind for things of the flesh, certainly,” Tolin replied, amused. “Lacking the required weapons seems to have soured my taste for that particular kind of battle, Swordslinger.”

“Makes sense,” I said. “What time is it?”

“A little after dawn,” Tolin informed me.

I pulled up my trousers, strapped on my belt, and tossed my robe over my shoulder. I started on my way back to the Top Deck after I found my shoes, and I kept my mind open to the Hidden Sage’s voice. The cabled walls of the World Engine hummed with their usual teeth-buzzing power as I tracked my way through the maintenance corridors.

“Nice to have you as a wake-up alarm,” I commented aloud.

Tolin’s phantasmic form melted out of the floor, and he hovered along beside me like a ghost. “Well, you looked a little too comfortable for a man who’s supposed to be waging a war against demonkind. We couldn’t have that.”

Tolin’s observation sobered me a little. He wasn’t wrong about that.

“Fair. No issues throughout the night?”

“Aside from a little internal turbulence, nothing bears mentioning,” Tolin said with a dry chuckle. “Your Blades were busy with Euyin’s little metalsmithing games, but we weren’t attacked or interfered with.”

I nodded. “I’ll rally the troops, get them onboard, and get us moving.”

I hit the steps up to the Control Room, strolled up them, and found Euyin waiting for me. The skinny half-elf looked like he’d barely slept, but he brimmed with an infectious energy. I don’t know how he did it, but he made professional gamers loaded up on energy drinks look pretty sedate by comparison. I grinned at his disheveled appearance, and I spotted a pile of leather bundles on the table. Some of the wrapped items were long, some short, and I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking at.

“Morning, Ethan,” Euyin chirped. “Sleep well?”

“Better than I have in a while,” I told him. “I’m bringing the others onboard today, so you’ll get to meet the team properly.”

“Well, they’ll be properly equipped,” he said, a note of pride in his voice.

“Not a bad way to introduce yourself,” I chuckled.

Euyin laid a hand on one of the bundles. “You want to see?”

“I’m tempted, but best to save it for when they get here,” I assured him.

I clapped him on
